About Therapy
What is Therapy?
Therapy is a safe space where you are able to work through life stressors and achieve your goals collaboratively with a therapist that uses evidence-based treatments such as CBT, DBT, EMDR, etc.
What sets us apart from other clinics is that we are mission-driven with an Islamic lens, under the guidance and practices of the Al Kisa mission team. We prioritize our faith by providing therapy with an Islamic-based lens based on your level of comfort.
What about Mandated Reporting in Therapy?
Mandated reporting is there to protect vulnerable members of this society and it is nothing to be afraid of. Culturally aware therapists can help determine whether the child or individual is in danger or not.
All therapists measure threats through consistency and reliability, and overall each therapist needs to abide by the rules: do no harm and do good.
Just because therapists are mandated reporters does not mean that they are going to judge a person or believe that they are a perpetrator or an evil person. The act is separated from the person and the rule is there for the safety of the child or victim. Therapists understand that there is always more to the story.
How is Therapy different from talking to a friend?
A friend can be a great support in difficult times, however, a friend is not able to provide you regulated treatment from an objective lens due to the influence they have on your life. They are also not equipped to perform necessary treatments to work on improving your mental health. And with the therapists at Kisa Therapy, therapists can help you find a lot more clarity in terms of your spiritual and mental health.
What options are available if I am unable to afford the standard rate?
We understand that cost matters. A reduced fee is available to clients for whom the standard rate would prevent them starting therapy. There is no application and no documentation to produce. Raise it during your complimentary 15-minute consultation, or write to admin@kisatherapyclinic.org before you book, and we will find a rate that works. Our current fees are listed on our Pricing page.
Is Virtual Therapy as effective as In-Person Therapy?
Online therapy provides an equally effective option for mental health support as face-to-face therapy. People seeking therapeutic support for anxiety, depression, and other common mental health needs can use virtual or in-person therapy as a support. Online therapy offers easy access to mental health support from virtually any location with many flexible options in addition to reduced stigma and increased privacy.

The Process
Do I need a referral to see a Therapist?
Great question! No, you don’t need one! You are able to book an appointment with a therapist on your own!
Can Kisa Therapy Clinic prescribe medication?
Yes, in California. Sr. Jennifer Berry is a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and can prescribe medication when it is clinically appropriate, following a full psychiatric assessment. Our psychotherapists and social workers cannot prescribe, as that falls outside their scope of practice. Psychiatric care fees are listed on our Pricing page.
Do I need a referral to see the Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner?
No. You can book an initial psychiatric assessment directly. If you already work with one of our therapists, let them know so the two parts of your care can be coordinated.
Can I see a Therapist and the Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner at the same time?
Yes, and for many people that combination works best. Therapy and medication address different things. Sr. Jennifer Berry provides both psychotherapy and psychiatric care, and can work alongside your existing Kisa Therapy Clinic therapist.
I am afraid of being judged. How do I know it will be safe?
Islamic etiquette says we do not have the right to judge anyone and only Allah is the true judge.
In ḥadīth we are told one of the most important duʿās to make is “O Allah, make our ending the best ending.” Life can change at any moment, and people grow and change.
We are working hard to make this a safe, non-judgmental space, where you can be yourself and really connect with who you are. Our job is not to judge but to create a safe space for you to explore and process.
I am in Ontario. Can I receive therapy from Kisa Therapy Clinic?
Yes. Our Ontario clinicians are registered with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO) or with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW), and may see clients located anywhere in the province. Sessions are held by secure video, so where you live in Ontario does not restrict which of our Ontario therapists you can work with.
Registration follows where you are at the time of the session, not where you ordinarily live. If you will be outside Ontario on the day of an appointment, please tell your therapist in advance so the session can be rescheduled.
I am in the United States. Can I receive therapy from Kisa Therapy Clinic?
If you are in a state where one of our clinicians is licensed, yes. Licensure in the United States is granted state by state, and state law requires that you be physically present in that state at the time of the session.
The states we currently serve are listed on our Our Therapists page, and that list changes as clinicians complete credentialing. If your state is not listed, we are not able to accept you as a client at this time. We would encourage you to look for a licensed therapist in your own state, and we are glad to point you toward reputable directories, so please write to admin@kisatherapyclinic.org.
What happens once I book a free phone consultation or an initial session with a Therapist?
When you book a consultation or a session, you will receive a confirmation from Jane, our secure practice management system, containing a link to your appointment. Follow that link at the scheduled time; there is nothing to install. It will be a chance for the therapist to introduce themselves, talk about the process of therapy and answer any questions you may have. After your free consultation, you can choose to proceed with the clinician by booking a session through our website.
What if my Therapist isn't a good fit?
We would encourage you to have a conversation with your therapist about what is or isn’t working and see if you are able to work through the issues at hand. This could be a great opportunity for more powerful inner work. If it doesn’t work out, you are more than welcome to seek out another therapist from our team.
Fees & Insurance
What are the costs? How do I pay?
Our current fees are listed in full on our Pricing page. Rates for longer sessions for couples/family therapy and varying group therapies differ.
We accept payment via credit card (including Visa debit). Our online client portal which allows you to book appointments can also process credit card payments automatically for your convenience. If there is a preferred payment method that is not listed please reach out and we can do our best to accommodate.
Are therapy services covered under OHIP or insurance?
While psychotherapy and social work are regulated health professions in Ontario, they are unfortunately not covered under OHIP, OW or ODSP.
The majority of extended health benefits, however, do cover psychotherapy and social work services (typically in your health and dental insurance package from your employer). We encourage you to speak with your insurance provider about counseling services provided by a Registered Social Worker or Registered Psychotherapist to determine your eligibility and approved rates of coverage. We do not reimburse sessions if it turns out you do not have coverage.
